Carousel of 20th Century ProgressIn our re-imagined Impression de Temps, everything old is new again, and that includes the classic Carousel of Progress. We’ll update the final scene to cutting edge design at the end of the 20th Century. In our new story line, the “progress” family has traveled to Paris on the Concorde – at faster than the speed of sound - to celebrate the coming of the new millennium. Rather than focus on the latest in labor-saving kitchen appliances, our script will key on the fast pace of life at the turn of the century - like supersonic air travel, their quick trip from London to Paris via high speed rail through the new “Chunnel,” and how communications technology (the term “smartphone” was used in the 1990’s), and the Web are bringing people closer together. Grandpa finishes a conference call with his office, while the teenage daughter is video conferencing with soccer mates about an upcoming game. The TV shows scenes from the new Disneyland Paris. The son stands next to a sliding glass door leading to the balcony of their hotel suite. In the distance, we see the Eiffel Tower. As midnight approaches, the son rolls open the sliding glass door enabling us to better see an explosion of fireworks and hear the crowd below welcoming us to the “Great big beautiful tomorrow” of the 21st Century. The use of a large scale video screen at the back of this new 4th set of the CoP, will enable extremely realistic fireworks and other visual effects related to the Eiffel Town. This new show ending will help contemporary audiences better appreciate the ties to the past, since most people over the age of 25 will remember “Y2K.” By focusing on transportation and communications, we develop an appreciation of how much more progress there can be for new generations. |
Time Flies
Who hasn’t dreamed of stepping onto a futuristic hover board and floating inches above the ground? That is the premise of “Time Flies,” which replaces Autopia as our preferred transport mode of the future. Riders of all ages (44” height requirement) will race each other around twists and turns as they sway gracefully over the ground. Such travel is possible with their boards attached, via flexible polycarbonate rods, to a metal track above—similar to a zip line concept. Guests will wear safety harnesses (styled like a life vest), which will be attached to the support rod. With gravity powered assistance, visitors will be off on an exciting race to see who makes time fly faster.
No need for selfies, as we’ll capture your image crossing the finish line. This is one attraction where we know riders will be lining up for another go the moment their race is done. |
